Rui Tomás was born in Lisbon in 1976. From an early age he shows a natural hability for drawing. At the age of 14 he was awarded first place in a contest for the school (C + S Mafra) new logo. During high school he draws posters and t-shirts for school actions. He also participates as an illustrator in the fanzine “Cena Marada”.
At age 18, he leaves school and starts working at the company Mafroeste as a designer and support for projects of stores and offices. At customers' request, he begins to draw logos for the establishments he designs.
In 1996, at the age of 20 he starts his own company Trêsdê, Lda. At first he works in the 2 companies simultaneously, but 2 years later he dedicates himself exclusively to his company in the development and production of advertising materials and systems, through digital manufacturing processes. His own production and being a hands-on person, made him gain some skills in the “savoir-faire”.
In 2007, he decides to abandon his own production and dedicates himself to drawing, creativity and design.
In 2009 he begins to attend design degree at the Faculty of Architecture of the Lisbon University. He was awarded two scholarships of excellence (years 2009-2010 and 2010-2011), usually awarded to the best students of the University of Lisbon.
In 2012 he finishes his Degree with a final average of 18 points and receives from the Faculty of Architecture the “Caixa Geral de Depósitos” prize and the “Professor Daciano da Costa” prize. Also in this year he designs the “Choupana Caffé” on the emblematic Avenida da República in Lisbon.
In 2013 he is a finalist at a competition for a pavilion of the Domaine de Boisbuchet / Vitra Design Museum / Center Pompidou and wins an honorable mention from the jury of the competition. He has also participates in POP's - Original Portuguese Products, where 3 projects were selected for the exhibition at the Serralves Museum.
In 2014 he returns to the academic life in a Design Doctorate and participated in 4 projects in the exhibition of 22 years of Design of FAULisbon in MUDE Museum. He has the best final average of the course in the 22-year existence of Design of FAULisbon.
In 2016 he designs the project and accompanies the production of the Car and the “andor” of Nossa Sra. De Fátima to celebrate the centenary of the apparition and begins to teach at the Secondary School of Arts António Arroio.
